43No Other Love

Give me one love Give me one love that's true Give me the love That comes from you No other love will do Boy there's just too much In this world goin wrong We just got to get over And keep our love strong Friends through the years So many disappear, but You and I go on People choosin' sides now To the left or the right I'm stayin' in the middle With you here tonight Sun brings on the day The years slip away, but You and I go on On and on and on You and I have got to be strong When right becomes wrong We'll find a way On and on and on You and I have got to be strong When right becomes wrong We'll find a way through No other love will do In a time and place That keeps on spinning' around I hear your voice And there's no sweeter sound We can make mistakes But that doesn't change our fate, cuz You and I go on Outside things are changin' But not here in my heart Let it be the center The place where we start You got me for eternity, cuz You and I go on On and on and on You and I have got to be strong When right becomes wrong We'll find a way On and on and on You and I have got to be strong When right becomes wrong We'll find a way through No other love will do

44One in All

Fighting off the sense I'm gonna slip away Trying to pretend I won't disappear one day But it's getting harder every day Every day, every day What good is a contract made On another plane? But it's the only way of thinking That has kept me sane But maybe I believed in vain Believed in vain, believed in vain So now, what remains... Of falling leaves, late afternoon Springtime mist, the rising moon My childhood home My old bedroom, gone by So who am I? Am I made up of all the things That I have known? Who can own a moment Or know every single stone? In this life I feel so alone So alone, so alone My father's childhood home was razed But he didn't cry My mother's father left them But she never questioned why So many tiny sorrows have me asking why Asking why, asking why I hope there's peace after we die Will we remember snowball fights? First romances, summer nights? Pushing through with all our might But did that really make things right? A moth emerges, small and wet And easy thing to forget A leaf detaches from its stem A new beginning from an end First we stand, then we fall All are one, and one is all I must believe

45In the Red Again

It's just a drop in the bucket So you know that I'll say fuck it Gonna buy myself another drink I'm feeling the despair Of always going nowhere I need one less reason to think I've got a bed where I sleep A roof over my head But here I go again - I'm back in the red I'm in the red again Hangin' my head again Down to my last dime For the umpteenth time I'm in the red I've got friends who care about me And I know they'd never doubt me But these folks can only get me so far I've got bills to pay And at the end of the day Their love won't put no gas in my car The way things stand I'd rather lie down instead Cuz man oh man - I'm back in the red I'm in the red again Wish I was dead again If I knew what I should do I'd do it, wouldn't you? I'm in the red I'm gonna keep complainin' Cuz my time on earth is wanin' And I don't know how I'm gonna get by I don't believe it's tragic Still I need a little magic If I didn't laugh at all this I'd cry Am I talkin' to the wall Or did you hear what I said? Believe me, sister - I'm back in the red I'm in the red again Over my head again I'd accept a nickel Can't afford to be too fickle In the red Things might be OK By the end of the day But I'm not convinced that is a fact The fight is always goin' Though I keep my fear from showin' Gonna finish out this race on the track After all of these years Just look at where this has led I'm runnin' outta options And I'm back in the red I'm in the red again I'm outta bread again I can't make a batch Cuz I'm all outta scratch I'm in the red At a time in my life When my peers are sittin' pretty Waiting on the day they retire I'm a hustlin' on the streets Always movin' my feet Searchin' out positions for hire It don't feel fair it's so hard to get fed I feel so blue Cuz I'm back in the red I'm in the red again Hangin' my head again Baby can you spare a penny? Cuz you know I haven't any Man I'd holler for a dollar I'd thrill to see a bill I am telling you friend I am so close to the end I'm in the red Outta bread

46Wait Today

The dishes can wait today I'm gonna be late today Won't get much of anything done But I guess that's ok I feel a song comin' on And I just know that it's true Tho it won't pay the rent Not a single cent I've got to see this story through I know I've got something here And it speaks to me loud and clear Not sure yet what it's about Until I figure it out I'm starting to see the end Saying goodbye to friend after friend We'll be moving on together In the universal trend The losses and the wins One thing ends, one begins It's what we must know inside our hearts To keep the hope within I know I've got something here And it speaks to me loud and clear Not sure yet what it's about Until I figure it out I may as well sit back Cut myself a little slack I know this space in time Is never coming back The moon will always rise And pull the ocean tides The world don't care if you were there To tell your lies The truth comes out in time Each day will meet its prime You gotta know that it's all ebb and flow And that's just fine I know I've got something here And it speaks to me loud and clear Not sure yet what it's about Until I figure it out The dishes can wait today I'm gonna be late today Won't get much of anything done But I guess that's ok I feel a song comin' on And I just know that it's true Tho it won't pay the rent Not a single cent I've got to see this story through The dishes can wait today....

47Aqua and Teal

Before I die I want to go somewhere So far from here I've been wanting and waiting to go there Year after year It may as well be 'cross the galaxy I can't get there I'm struggling where I am right now Just to get enough air The blue of the water unreal Aqua and teal For all of my life I have lived With the ice and the snow My spirit's grown weary And now I am longing to go That glorious beach seems so out of reach I just sigh Will I ever see it myself Before I die? The blue of the water unreal Aqua and teal I know it's a first-world lament I know all my life was well-spent Still I want to know how it might feel... Aqua and teal I'll keep the dream living inside me Until I die Visions of tall white clouds All ringing the sky Palms gently bending Horizon undending There am I The blue of the water unreal Aqua and teal The blue of the water unreal Aqua and teal The blue of the water unreal

48Master of the Con

You're insane but you've made it plain You've got the world by the balls Tearing down our nation now With your executive calls Public service ain't your thing You're out to prove to the boys How much power that you hold You're out to make some noise Never touched that Bible When you took the oath You say that you're a Christian You can't lay claim to both Contradictions left and right Pulling lies out of the air Everyone has got to know You don't really care You're too loud, you're way too proud Stirring up your Nazi crowd World War III ends in a cloud of smoke This time it's no joke Give a child a hammer He's gonna swing it left and right Break a lotta shit and throw a hissy fit You won't get no sleep at night Baby, you are swingin' it Leaving chaos in your wake Trade wars, closed doors, broken lives I mourn for our mistake You're too loud, you're way too proud Stirring up your Nazi crowd World War III ends in a cloud of smoke This time it's no joke Lemmings to the cliff Pawns inside your scheme I keep sayin' to myself This has got to be a dream.... Did your mother never love you? Is that what spurs you on? You gotta throw your weight To prove your worth You're the master of the con You're too loud, you're way too proud Stirring up your Nazi crowd World War III ends in a cloud... You're too loud, you're way too proud Stirring up your Nazi crowd World War III ends in a cloud of smoke This time it's no joke This time it's no joke

49Ballad of '27

The great recession of '26 That was something to see You'd never think it could happen In the land of the free But free isn't what it used to be No free isn't what it used to be In '25 we were shaking our heads Saying "How bad can this get?" In spite of universal animosity We might still win the bet We didn't understand it all quite yet We didn't understand it all quite yet Why do we humans Make the same mistakes over again? With so many in need We're still pulled on by greed Giving all of our power away To a few privileged men In '24 we lost our chance To see the world expand Voting in a criminal To the highest office in the land His whims now became our command His whims now became our command In '27 I've come to learn Any empire can dive Prosperity is fleeting True peace will not arrive It's only in the moment, here and now Where we can truly thrive It's only in the moment, here and now Where we can truly thrive Why do we humans Make the same mistakes over again? With so many in need We're still pulled on by greed Giving all of our power away To a few privileged men You will lose your vision If you stare into the sun The golden age is over now The grand experiment done Too much of a good thing Proved too much for everyone Too much of a good thing Proved too much for everyone Why do we humans Make the same mistakes over again? With so many in need We're still pulled on by greed Giving all of our power away To a few privileged men Giving all of our power away

50Sing for Me

Could I please sing for you? I asked, as I stood beside the door She nodded "yes" and so I took a chair And slid it 'cross the floor The morning light of a winter day Filled the room with white and gray As she entreated me to stay Eyes closed I sang for her awhile and then I paused to let the silence in Her hand it lifted from the bed She opened up her eyes And then she said Sing for me, sing for me Please sing for me She told me of her summers In the orchard on the farm Climbing in the branches The smell of hay The sun so warm My friend, Claudette, my cousin's wife She has no memory of her life But when they sing Amazing Grace You see the smile returning to her face, so Sing for me, sing for me Please sing for me I am grateful I remember All the stories of my past Almost 100 years now And yet it's all gone by so fast My heart is full of love From all the life that I have lived My head is filled with all I know And now I know I've nothing left to give, so Sing for me, sing for me Please sing for me Sing for me, sing for me Please sing for me In memory of Gloria

51Tomorrow Becomes Today

If you woke up today Feeling relatively good Safe inside your bedroom In that same old neighborhood The water ran, the lights came on You had something there to eat Rest easy now in knowing this: Your life is pretty sweet Now I know that you've got things to do Your role in life to fill Whether chasing down that dream Or paying down that bill There's always one more task at hand That's something we all know But you simply can't do everything Sometimes something has to do Like a Sunday in December Or a Tuesday in July The days themselves become routine And the years pass on by The hours are long but the years are short Isn't that what they say? To help us understand how fast Tomorrow becomes today All those dreams you've held on to Those things that you were gonna do Plans you made and thought about But never quite came true They never saw the light of day I know that bothers you Better just to let some go Cuz not every dream comes true When I see you again my friend All that's lost just fades away Only love remains at the end Of the cosmic day You can't be everywhere at once Sometimes you gotta pick and choose Life will let you win sometimes But you're also gonna lose Be glad for your successes And those lucky cards you've drawn Savor what you have right now Soon enough the whole thing's gone Like a Sunday in December Or a Tuesday in July The days themselves become routine As the years pass on by The hours are long but the years are short Isn't that what they say? To help us understand how fast Our lives slip away To help us understand how fast Tomorrow becomes today To help us understand how fast Tomorrow becomes today

52Never Know

It came as a surprise to me I always had to guess Which rules made sense to follow Choosing to say no or to say yes I went away to school I was told that's what you did The world a tangled mystery When I was a kid I met a man and fell in love We had a son and then The whole thing fell apart somehow I found myself alone again You think you got a plan The situation well in hand But you never know No you never know You think you got it figured out Beyond a shadow of a doubt But you never know No you never know I moved us to the country On a hillside in the woods With chickens in the garden Once again life was good Raising up my boy Was my reason to live I built a home for the two of us With everything I had to give Nature unbounded, freedom and space Our hearts were full There was magic in that place My son went off to school As I had years ago A million dreams behind his eyes A million different places he could go Starting his adventure Altogether yet unknown Standing at the doorway of his life My son was now grown Thunder rolling in, a cool reprieve Mountains, sky and trees Can this really be a place That someone ever leaves? You think you got a plan The situation well in hand But you never know No you never know You think you got it figured out Beyond a shadow of a doubt But you never know No you never know We are finally at that place I never thought we'd be The one I love the best departs My life's greatest irony Thunder rolling in, a cool reprieve Mountains, sky and trees Can this really be place That someone ever leaves? The secret of life, I want to know The secret of life, I think I know The secret of life - is to let go

53E Pluribus

You thought it couldn't happen In your own backyard But it's already underway You don't have to look far The ignorance of our nation Has become an awful thing Look how easily Our president became a king A father torn out of his car In the pickup line at school You saw it in your feed today Are you telling me that's cool? Pulled that woman from her child Slammed her to the ground If this was your mother Would you let that shit go down? Fear is the tool of a tyrant The time is here No more staying silent Playing safe is how we fall, E pluribus unum One and all Where's the money that's been saved? Where's this better life? The have-nots clinging to their rage Are gonna feel the cutting knife Say goodbye to services That care for those in need They won't help you when you're down They're gonna leave you there to bleed Fear is the tool of a tyrant The time is here We cannot be compliant Playing safe is how we fall E pluribus unum One and all Columbia, embrace us now Drop your armor and your sword Give us olive branch and laurel wreath Once the promise of our shore For those of you who hear me now Give this all some thought See the bigger picture here Look how we're being bought The promises seducing us Are nothing more than air When it's time to cash them in They will not be there Fear is the tool of a tyrant All I hear is the sound Of them growing violent Playing safe is how we fall E pluribus unum One and all One and all

54Gregory

His name was Gregory And he lived alone A row of bird feeders on the line My son and I stopped in one day to visit him We took our time He said that he'd been living On his own for years Ever since his mother passed away He had no other prospects No place to go, so he stayed The truth is that we can never know What's coming next All the twists and turns awaiting Down the line We will lose the ones we love And it will hurt But we'll hold our breath And tell ourselves we're fine Content in the cottage by the old hay field With an ancient TV set there by his side 30 years or 30 days, it was hard to say It was a long, endless, empty ride I asked "What do you remember growing up out here? Does this place still look and feel the same?" He seemed to drift off in and out of memories So I gently spoke aloud his name "Lilies by the locust tree, way out in Grandma's yard The darkness of the woods beyond back then it seemed so far Coasting on our bicycles down cemetery hill Was such a thrill, I feel it still" Driving down the road I'd see his kitchen light Telling me that everything was fine Until one day I noticed something different then No bird feeders hung upon the line Gregory I know I should've visited I feel I left you waiting all alone To you and all the lonely souls Upon this earth I promise you that one day you'll go home The truth is that we can never know What's coming next All the twists and turns Awaiting down the line We will lose the ones we love And it will hurt But we'll hold our breath And tell ourselves we're fine So to you and all the lonely souls Upon this earth I promise that one day you will go home Back to the light and the endless peace From which every one of us has come His name was Gregory And he lived alone
